6 Tips To Using Tanning Beds Safely

By: Tim Croy

If you're looking for a simple way to get that sun-kissed bronze look all year, use tanning beds, which are widely available in salons and spas. These machines use UV rays, generated by fluorescent bulbs, to tan the skin. Because tanning beds have different effects than tanning by sunlight, you should use caution to protect your skin. Try the following tips:

* Know your limit. Every tanning bed is different, varying in shape, size, and intensity, so you need to make sure you know how much time you can safely spend in each type. (This should be easy to do, because beds are required by law to display the amount of exposure.) A good rule to follow is never to spend more than 20 minutes at a time in a bed, and never more than 2 consecutive days.

* Protect delicate body parts. Many parts of your body, especially your face, are particularly susceptible to UV radiation. Just closing your eyes won't keep them safe; you need to wear goggles. (If you can't find any at your tanning salon, bring your own pair from home.) To protect your lips, just wear lip balm with sunscreen. Nose plugs will keep your mucous membranes safe and healthy.

* Start slow. Gradually work up how much time you spend in the tanning bed. Start by spending 4-5 minutes in your first sessions, and build up your exposure over a few weeks. In 3-4 weeks, you can probably safely handle the amount of exposure for the specific bed you use.

* Wear sunscreen. Even though you're inside, your skin is still exposed to UV rays, and special lotions are available at your salon to reduce the risks associated with UV radiation - especially skin cancer. Use products with beta-carotene and vitamin A to make your tan look natural.

* Be clean. When they are shared by many people, tanning beds can sometimes spread certain diseases and lice. If you're at a salon, make sure the management thoroughly cleans every bed before and after each use. If you want, you can usually request a free hygienic wipe to give the bed another cleaning. Even if you're using a personal bed, make sure to use a disinfectant every time you tan.

* Use fans. It's imperative that you have good air circulation while tanning. If your bed does not have an internal fan, set up one outside that will blow on the bed during your session. Although overheating is a common problem, it should never be lightly dismissed.

Tanning beds aren't for everyone. For example, if you are prone to sunburns or have skin that is sensitive to UV rays, you might want to consider using a self-tanner or visiting a spray tanning booth. But with responsible use and careful planning, tanning beds are a safe way to keep your "just got back from the beach" look all year long!
