Male Impotence: Myths and Facts

By: Walter Kopal

Impotence is a well-known but less addressed problem. There maybe several reasons for it and the most important reason being men not willing to come up with their problem openly which worsens the
situation. Causes of Impotence or Erectile Dysfunction vary.
Major Causes of Erectile Dysfunction include:
Vascular disease
Neurological problems
Metabolic syndrome
Diabetes
Prostate cancer
Benign prostatic hyperplasia
Medications
Hormonal disorders
Psychological factors
Weight control and exercise
Smoking
Alcohol and substance abuse
Neurogenic Disorders - spinal cord and brain injuries, nerve disorders such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, and stroke.
Hormonal Disorders - pituitary gland tumor; low or abnormally high levels of the hormone testosterone.
Arterial Disorders - peripheral vascular disease, hypertension; reduced blood flow to the penis.
Cavernosal Disorders - Peyronie's disease.
Psychological causes: Mental disorders like clinical depression, schizophrenia, substance abuse, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, personality disorders or traits, psychological problems, negative
feelings.
Surgery - radiation therapy, surgery of the colon, prostate, bladder, or rectum may damage the nerves and blood vessels involved in erection. Prostate and bladder cancer surgery often require removing tissue and nerves surrounding a tumor, which increases the risk for impotence.
Ageing.
Improper Lifestyle - alcohol and drugs, obesity, cigarette smoking
Incidence of impotence is approximately 85 percent higher in male smokers compared to non-smokers .Smoking is a key cause of erectile dysfunction. Smoking causes impotence because it promotes arterial narrowing. See also Tobacco and health.

Other disorders.
A few reasons of impotence may be iatrogenic (medically caused). Various antihypertensives (medications proposed to control high blood pressure) and some drugs that
change central nervous system response may inhibit erection by disallowing blood supply or by changing nerve activity. Surgical intervention for a number of several
conditions may remove anatomical structures essential to erection, damage nerves, or damage blood supply. Complete removal of the prostate gland or external beam radiotherapy
of the gland is general causes of impotence; both are treatments for prostate cancer. Excessive alcohol use has long been known as one cause of impotence.
An erection is the result of several processes: a man get's sexually inspired which leads to increased flow of blood into the corpora cavernosa - the main arteries of
the penis - and this leads to his penis becoming erect. There are certain chemicals and hormones involved in increasing the blood flow to the penis. If due to any reason, the functioning of
these chemicals and hormones is interrupted, erection might not come about. This indicates that you might be suffering from impotence. In other words, partial or total impairment of the erectile function is called impotence.
