Why do Diets Fail?

By: Eric Minden

I am always hearing about a new diet that someone has tried and had little success with; if I try it will I have the same results? It is possible that you will have the same results as someone else who has tried the same diet, yet you may have better results. This all depends on the diet and you.

There are a number of reasons that many diets don’t work, but the number one reason that they fail is that they are simply not sustainable for an active and healthy lifestyle. For example, there is a fad juice diet, whereby dieters invest in some juices that they consume. The juices cleanse their bodies, according to the diet developers, and help them to drop many pounds in a short amount of time. But can you really live off of juice alone? Would you want to? No. Not unless you have some fundamental issues with your body image that need to be addressed through counseling.

If you are trying to lose weight, look for a diet that has materials to guide you. Many diets will have recipe books and resources that will help to keep you on track. If you can find a diet that truly helps you sustain your weight loss through a support mechanism, you are more likely to stick with the diet and lose weight than a fad diet that has no support.

Years ago, there was a grapefruit trend, whereby the diet makers suggested that a grapefruit a day would help to burn fat in your body. There was no proof of the grapefruits effectiveness in anything but filling your stomach; therefore, the diet was not sustainable for the long-term. This was what is now known as a fad diet, in which you are told something will work and have immediate results, yet it shows little results or no results at all. You should try stay away from fad diets if you want to see long-term results.

Before starting a new diet, be sure to talk to your doctor about the health risks involved in a diet. Many diets promote a healthy lifestyle and weight loss, but there are also many diets that will cause more harm than good to many people. Good diets will make you feel better about yourself and inspire you to do more activities during the week. A bad diet will make you feel uninterested in what is going on because you are trying to focus on what you are eating instead of more important things such as family and work. One thing to keep in mind is that if your diet doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t the diet for you.
